Bernie’s Book Bank 2nd Annual Book Lovers’ City Lunch
Nearly 180 guests attended Bernie’s Book Bank’s 2nd Annual Book Lovers’ City Lunch hosted by KPMG on October 21, 2016.
As the leading provider of quality books to at-risk children throughout Chicagoland, Bernie’s Book Bank was delighted to host Steve Pemberton, a living success story demonstrating the impact of book ownership to under-served children. He is an inspiration and motivation to continue the mission of Bernie’s Book Bank.
Pemberton, Chief Diversity Officer at Walgreens and author of A Chance in the World, enlightened us all as he shared his moving story, “When you are a child in the midst of the fell clutch of circumstance, you remember every kindness, every smile…you are trying to figure out – are they going to be the one who sees me for what I am? A young boy or young girl not of circumstance, but of possibility? That’s the silent plea.”
The children that Bernie’s Book Bank serves share that same plea. The plea that generous supporters like you will make sure they have the opportunity to read their way to a better life, just as Steve Pemberton did.
Bernie’s Book Bank is extremely grateful to KPMG, Allstate and all of our generous sponsors for supporting an incredible event. We hope you enjoyed yourself and learned more about our mission to serve all at-risk children throughout Chicagoland with 12 quality books each year from birth-6th grade. Bernie’s Book Bank currently serves more than 250,000 at-risk children across Chicagoland, and more children are waiting to receive their first bag of books.
